Adults with ADD or ADHD may find both positive and negatives in the workplace and adapt to those strengths and weaknesses. Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D., suggests some of the following hints:
- If you are in a job that requires intense concentration, request or find a quiet spot where disturbances and movement are not obvious.
- Many offices offer flex time where one can arrive later or earlier and be at work at times when people are not around.
- Take the opportunity to request assignments that interest you. For example, if you are creative, high energy, and intelligent, avoid jobs that are dull or detail oriented.
- Set goals and prioritize your work and inform your supervisor for suggestions on being more productive.
- Do not hesitate to ask for instructions to be repeated if you do not know what is meant. You may want to write the instructions down.
- Move around when possible. Instead of calling someone on the telephone, walk down the hall.Walk and exercise on breaks.
- Work on more than one project at a time. When you get bored with one, switch to the other.
Remember that if you were the one who was hyperactive in school, that attribute can translate into high energy and drive. If you were the one who talked too much in class, you may be very successful at networking, promoting, and sales.
