Dexedrine is the registered brand name of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals for dextroamphetamine sulfate. Available in tablets or sustained release spansules, Dexedrine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant drug used for the treatment of ADHD. Dexedrine may help increase attention and decrease impulsiveness and should be used as part of a total treatment program for ADHD that may include counseling and other therapies. It is also used to treat narcolepsy, a sleep condition in which the person may fall asleep suddenly during normal activities. Dexedrine comes in 5-mg tablets and 5-, 10-, and 15-mg spansules.
People who have certain health conditions or a family history of the following conditions should not take Dexedrine:
- Heart disease or hardening of the arteries
- Moderate to severe high blood pressure
- Hyperthyroidism
- Glaucoma
- Are very anxious, tense, or agitated
- Have a history of drug abuse
- Are taking or have taken within the past 14 days an antidepression medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
- Is sensitive or allergic to other stimulant medications
- Has mental problems such as psychosis, mania, bipolar illness, or depression
- Has tics or Tourette's syndrome
- Has thyroid problems
- Has seizures or an abnormal brain wave test (EEG).
It is not recommended for children less than 3 years old.
Common side effects include fast heartbeat, tremors, trouble sleeping, decreased appetite, headache, dizziness, upset stomach, weight loss, and dry mouth. Dexedrine may affect the person's ability to drive or do other dangerous activity. Dexedrine is a federally controlled substance (CII) because it can be abused or can lead to dependence.
