Children and adults with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have certain behaviors that are repeated over and over. It may be that they wash their hands constantly or are overly conscious about germs. They may have to do certain things or certain movements in a certain way. Sometimes tic disorders and OCD are grouped together.

Peterson et al. (2001) has performed the largest study to date following 976 children into early adulthood and examining the relationship among ADHD, tic disorders, and OCD. The study found that OCD declined initially by adolescence but then increased by 3.3 percent in early adulthood. Tics and OCD were significantly related to each other at adolescence and again in young adulthood, whereas OCD was associated with ADHD at both time points. The Peterson study suggested some relationship between childhood ADHD and adult OCD, but most of the children with ADHD did not develop tic disorders or ADHD. The risk among children with ADHD of having OCD is not a clear one and may be at most 3-5 percent. However, Brown (2000) found the inverse relationship may be true and suggests that 6-33 percent of children with OCD may have ADHD.
