...Monet and Renoir visited La Grenouillère, a bathing resort on the Seine outside of Paris, where the two of them painted outdoors. The optical experience of sunlight falling on rippling water was recorded on canvas by different brushstrokes. Monet intended to use these riverside paintings to develop other canvases. These paintings marked a turning point in the history of the Impressionist landscape. The more Monet developed his interest in the landscape painting the more he distanced himself from his bohemian lifestyle and his friends in Paris (Welton).
After the death of Manet, Renoir became one of Monet's closest friends. In the mid-1870's Monet and his wife stayed with Ernest Hoschedé and his wife Alice at their country home in Montgeron. They later moved to Vétheuil, a secluded village. Monet's visits to Paris became less frequent. In 1879 Monet's wife, Camille died following the birth of their second son Michel. Ernest distanced himself and was often in Paris. Alice and Monet moved to Poissy in 1881 and two years later to Giverny. As his financial situation became more stable he began to travel and when he returned, following the death of Ernest, he and Alice wed (Stuckey). The 1880's were a transition for Impressionism. The transition applied more to Monet's colleagues than to himself personally. Durand-Ruel continually bought works from Monet for his gallery.
In 1886 at the Impressionist exhibition, which Monet had been absent from, Georges Seurat presented his scientific technique of Neo-Impressionism. The art world was stunned and excited (Shackelford). It challenged the basics of the Impressionist's style and orientation. Impressionism was no longer an avant-garde style. It had repercussions on Monet's perception and understanding of his own art. He never gave up on Impressionism and his travels were aimed at broadening his horizons. Monet had also traveled to the Normandy coasts, where Delacroix, Courbet, and Millet had previously painted. There at Pourville, Fécamp, and Étretat Monet explored motifs he had first treated in the late 1860 and early 1870's. He painted his End of Hamlet of Gruchy and his Fisherman's Cottage on the Cliffs of Varengeville. He often said he felt a profound connection to the Normandy landscape (Shackelford). His Normandy landscaped had been presented at the Impressionist exhibition of 1882. Monet was often seeking opportunities for independent solo exhibitions. He did not want to be tied down to the Salon and he wanted to create works that would set him apart from his colleagues among the Impressionists...
