Media and Society

...As society continues to evolve there have been some major changes with regards to media. The technological revolution that has engulfed the western world has exposed many new avenues for media to distribute its information and with this there have come drawbacks and some social evolving. The internet has changed the face of print media and added a new area to it. However with this there has been a great deal of skepticism that has arrived with the internet. The whole notion of authenticity and reliability has become more of a factor in society. With print media in the past, much of what was distributed was seen for most of the part as reliable and authentic, yet now, with the internet one must question its information received to a much larger degree than it did before.
New avenues for media to distribute its information have been welcomed buy the industry however consumers now need to judge for themselves whether or not the source of the information is authentic. Yet the internet has also become an essential media tool and also a prime example of the post modernist world that we live in today. The idea of parody, the escaping of identity and the blurring of boundaries are all central themes of a post modernist world which is seen so clearly in the on set of the internet.
The whole notion of the self and how now people can manipulate it to conform to a particular situation or place has become a new phenomenon with the onset of the internet, and this idea fits well into a post modernist account. Print media in contemporary society has also seen a blurring of boundaries between what is real and what is fiction with magazines such as "Ralph" and "cosmopolitan". These prints are using interaction with readers to such a degree that now stories that are written in these it has become indistinguishable whether they are fiction or non fiction. The blurring of what is real and what is manufactured is ever increasing.
Through taking on a comprehensive study of the Print media in our contemporary society one can learn much. It is interesting to note that even though theorists base their accounts on different set structures, (e.g. structural, post-structural, postmodern etc) elements from all accounts seem to be evident in all theorists work. What can be taken from this study was that the print media is never a stable unit and it is ever changing to conform to the changing face of society. In fact it has and continues to help in the changing of society and shapes the way the western world believes. As such a powerful tool the print media has such a great influence on our contemporary world...
