...Telnet is another form of e-mail but is segregated to connecting to remote computers via a telnet port. Telnet connections, unlike phones and modem lines are error-free. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Internet relay chat is a worldwide chat room. IRC was started in the late 1980's by an employee of the Department of Information Processing Science, Jarkko Oikarinen. It was originally meant for news-type discussion groups and person-to-person communications. Through trial and error he was able to include and get accounts to institutions in various other countries. Users can talk (type) to one another in real time. To be able to use IRC, you need an IRC program usually called a Client. Two more common are the Macintosh IRC client called Ircle and Windows called mIRC. After connecting to the Internet, then you can connect to an IRC Network. Using your nickname (handle) you can enter a channel (Chat room) or chat privately. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) File Transfer Protocol is the easiest way for exchanging Internet files among computers. FTP uses an application protocol ( a special set of rules) to download programs and Web pages from other servers to your computer. FTP is generally part of a package that uses TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol). The TCP allows the exchange of messages within the Internet and the IP allows the messages to be sent and received. Protocols by definition are sets of rules. Archie is a search tool used with FTP. Archie helps locate stored FTP site files. By entering keywords in the filenames, Archie has the ability to search for matching information, The list can be retrieved by you through FTP. Gopher is a server that lists its files in a top-level menu based structure. The beauty of this type of system is that you need not know where the information you want is, you can navigate through menus and by entering different selections, obtain the information you need... ...It is a probable deduction that the future Internet will be bigger, better, faster and more inviting to use. Computer networks will give us graphics, movies sound that we can only imagine. The question of who will manage the newly evolving Internet is of concern. There is a large share of economic impact to unfold. The stakes are sure to be much higher in the future. There are always two paths that can be followed. If technology and business continue to steer us in the right direction, the future will be a technology of Internet capabilities for all to behold... ...When the Internet was first perceived it had an immediate need and use. The government saw the need to protect its resources and began to build a computer vehicle to fulfill that need. As the years went by, the needs and demands and uses of the Internet have grown and changed with the economic and technological growth of the world. The ability to communicate in a moments time, without error and at a minimal or at no cost has become vital to our existence. As our need expand so will the uses of the Internet. With virtual reality and three dimensional graphics, the future is looking bright. We are becoming a wireless society and the Internet is falling into order. The problems we encounter by means of internet accessing are fixable. The problems we would face without the evolvement of future growth in the Internet might be worse. We have built ourselves a computer Internet world that is second to none...
