Michael Faraday's famous experiments in 1831 led to his discovery of the law of electromagnetic induction, which paved the way for his invention of the generator. The coil of wire, situated between the force field generated by the two magnets, is attached to a shaft called a prime mover. The prime mover transfers motion energy to the generator. The coil of wire spins in the force field, generating a steady flow of electrons in the wire. This flow of electrons is called electricity. In essence, the coil of wire acts as a conductor used to induce voltage. Either the conductor or the magnetic field must be moving for induction to occur.
Today, electricity is produced by generators that still operate under Faraday's basic conditions, including in large power stations. Portable generators are also used in homes, offices, hospitals, stores, and factories during times of electricity blackout or in times of emergency.
