Albert Arnold Gore Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., to a prominent political family from Tennessee (his father was a senator). He graduated from Harvard University in 1969 and served in Vietnam. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 and then won a seat in the Senate in 1984. In Congress, Gore became noted for championing environmental issues.

Gore was elected vice president under President William J. Clinton. As vice president, Gore oversaw a major initiative, the National Performance Review, that made a series of recommendations to reduce waste and redundancy in the federal government. Gore ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2000. He won the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College following a bitter recount in Florida in which his opponent, George W. Bush, won by 537 votes.

Since leaving office, Gore has remained prominent in the environmental movement and emerged as a vocal critic of the foreign and security policy of the Bush administration. Gore declined to run for the presidency in 2004. In 2006, the former vice president launched a major environmental initiative based on his book An Inconvenient Truth and the release of a documentary film by the same title. In 2007, Gore's documentary won an Academy Award. Gore also went on a nationwide speaking tour in which he condemned U.S. environmental policy and started a program to train grassroots organizations to lobby on behalf of ecological programs.
