Hillary Rodham was born in Chicago and earned a law degree from Yale University in 1973. She married William J. Clinton in 1975. Clinton helped her husband campaign and served as a political advisor throughout his career. She was First Lady of Arkansas for 12 years and then became First Lady of the United States when her husband was inaugurated as president in 2001. Throughout her marriage, Clinton endured a series of infidelities by her husband, but stood by his side during the 1998–1999 impeachment.

Clinton successfully ran for the Senate in 2000. Once in office, she established a reputation as a moderate on foreign and security policy. She voted in favor of the Patriot Act, the authorization for the use of force that resulted in Operation Enduring Freedom, and military action in the 2003 Iraq War. However, she became increasingly critical of President George W. Bush and his management of the Iraq insurgency. Clinton was one of the senators who called for the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld; however, she opposed the creation of a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.
